Redbud Book #2

Book Guidelines

Revised: 2012 Dec 30

The second Redbud Chapter book is currently starting the writing process for the second book with current emphasis on trees, shrubs, and vines of Nevada and Placer Counties.

The group charged with directing the development process is called the Editorial Review Board (ERB).  The Chair is Chet Blackburn [885-0201].  The other members are Karen Callahan, Julie Carville, Richard Hanes, Roger McGehee, Cindy Rubin and Bill Wilson.

The ERB has created several documents to help all of those people involved with the book creation.  They will all be in pdf format so you will need Adobe Reader.

The main document for authors and photographers is:

THE REDBUD AUTHORS STYLE MANUAL.pdf   43pgs.

The shorter document just for photographers (Section 7 of the manual above) is:

   THE PHOTOGRAPHERS MANUAL.pdf   5pgs.

Direct general questions to Chet, taxonomic questions to any of us, and technical questions of a computer or photgraphy nature to Bill [265-8040, wilsonb@yosemite.edu].

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are working on an update of this area which will meet our joint needs in the future.  Look at the Authors Style Manual above for the authors list and species lists.  Contact Chet Blackburn at chetblackburn@yahoo.com or Bill Wilson wilsonb@yosemite.edu for any questions.

Here is a photo wishlist from the authors telling the photographers which plant part shots (red cells) are needed for their species to be identified. Look at the bottom of the document for explanations.  If you have further questions, contact the authors directly.  Some of these plants start blooming in January like the manzanitas so get out those cameras and raincoats and start shooting. Don't forget the ongoing contest for the best Redbud shot.  It will go on the cover.

The files below are constructed using the The Jepson Manual (1993) sometimes called TJM(93)

   THE BOOK2 PHOTO WISHES 1-1.xls   100KB

   The Book2 Photo Wishes 1-1.pdf   320KB

Email Chet or Bill to get access to the Book2 Editorial Minutes.

The sequence of species in the book will be alphabeticals by family and then within each family it will be alphabetical by genus then species names.  The lists below are used with the Jepson Concordance [http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/interchange/JMtoJMII.html] to generate a updated list based on the new The Jepson Manual, 2nd Ed., 2012 sometimes called TJM(12).

The files below are constructed using the The Jepson Manual (2012) sometimes called TJM(12).  These are the most recent and best files to use in selecting photos from your library to submit for the "Woody Plants Book". Latest update 4 Feb 2013.

   THE BOOK2 PHOTO WISHES 2-2.xls  156KB

   The Book2 Photo Wishes 2-2.pdf         114KB

Several major changes have happened from the TJM93 to TJM12.  Changes to families as well as genera and species have taken place.   For example: The Maples (Aceraceae) have been moved to the Sapindaceae family, etc.  You can use the Jepson Concordance link above to find out if an old name has been updated.
