Sierra Buttes Wildflower Weekend
Redbud Members Only
Sierra Nevada Field Campus
San Francisco State University
Join us for a wildflower-filled weekend trip to the Sierra Buttes area! This is one of the nicer areas for wildflowers in all of the Sierra Nevada range. The Sierra Nevada Field Campus (SNFC) is located on Hwy 49 along the north fork of the Yuba River, about 58 miles up Hwy 49 above Nevada City and 1 mile above Basset's Station.
This trip is intended for people who are interested in spending the weekend focused on exploring the plants of the area! The emphasis is on the observation of many wildflowers in a variety of different habitats with the full resources of SNFC at our disposal.
We will drive up to the SF State Sierra Nevada Field Campus the afternoon of Friday, July
5th. Accommodations will be at the Field Campus either in provided platform tents or you can
bring your own tent. Meals will be served at the Dining Hall.
We will have field trips both Saturday and Sunday and will return home on Sunday, July 7th †in the afternoon. Pets are not allowed at the SNFC.
A map and directions are available at http://www.sfsu.edu/~sierra/Directions.html. Check the web site http://www.sfsu.edu/~sierra for more detailed information about the campus and species lists.

PERSONAL SUPPLIES: Bring your own sleeping bag, blankets, pillows, towels, toiletries, etc. Be sure your sleeping bag is warm enough. Although daytime temperatures will range from the upper 60ís to upper 80ís, the nighttime temperatures can often and unpredictably drop below 40įF. Extra blankets are available for your use.
You should bring shoes and clothing appropriate for easy hiking. A day pack and an unbreakable water bottle are most useful. We can save paper and plastic bags if you bring plastic containers for lunches (sandwich, cookies, etc.). At high altitudes the sunís rays can burn more easily, so hats and sunscreen are highly recommended.
There are beautiful lakes nearby that are excellent for swimming as the summer heats up. We get occasional rain events so come prepared with rain gear. The nights are always very dark and a flashlight or headlamp is an absolute necessity. Many people enjoy a camp chair at their tent, as well. You may want to bring extra snacks/food/beverages but remember this is bear country and all food and scented items must be kept in the lodge refrigerators, NOT in the tents or cars!
Since we are going to be botanizing, bring your reference books, hand lenses, cameras and binoculars, etc. if you wish. We will have access to a lab with dissecting scopes.
Questions should be directed to Bill Wilson at email@example.com or 530-265-8040.
